USB drives are the new floppy or compact disk, and they come with many additional benefits that their older alternatives didn't. Since USB drives have made it known to the world that they are a must have, companies are beginning to capitalize on the marketing value of a custom USB drive.

Unlike floppy disks, compact disks, and even to an extent, CDs, companies can easily put their logo, graphic designs, contact information, and more, on USB drives. They can incorporate company colors and they can even design a custom USB drive into various shapes such as credit cards, mini trucks, guitars, crosses, writing pens, pocket knives and just about any other shape that a company feels defines them. This all goes a long way in helping them brand their company while providing a compact and durable device to transfer data.

USB drives are replacing floppy and compact disks as a data storage device. In fact, most computers are not even made with a floppy disk drive anymore. USB drives weigh in at about two ounces and are anywhere from one to four inches long depending on the shape ordered. They store anywhere from 64MB to 32GB of data, which is equivalent to thousands of floppy and compact disks storage space combined. They store all types of data including word documents, graphics and pictures. Plus they are fast to open and fast to save data. USB drives are rewritable, erasable and they can be edited. The typical life span of a USB drive is about ten years.

Not only are these devices small with huge storage capabilities and other benefits, but they are also durable. The main part in a USB drive is called a circuit board. This is where all the data is stored. The circuit board is protected by an outer layer of metal, wood, plastic, rubber or other durable material. This is where the custom USB drive can be customized with logos and colors. The part of the USB drive that connects to the computer is called the USB connector. This part is usually protected by either a cap, which can also be customized or it is retractable, depending on the custom design applied to the USB drive.

Companies everywhere are finding that people of all ages and of all levels of computer skills can benefit from custom USB drives. They are compatible with most computer types from laptops to desktops, as well as with most computer operating systems from Microsoft Word to Mac. To reach the masses, many companies are using USB drives to give out as freebies at trade shows and presentations to help market their businesses.

For their employees, companies are giving out USB drives with their logo that are password protected. This helps in two ways. First, if the USB drive is lost, no one can use it but the person who holds the password. Secondly, if the custom USB drive is lost, it can easily be returned with the logo and contact information printed on it guiding the way.

Custom USB drives can also be further used for branding by allowing companies to download logo documents onto the data stored on the device. This way, if they are giving away USB drives as freebies, the user will have to see the company's logo every time they use the drive. For their employees, companies can choose to have a custom USB drive ordered that already contains many of the documents that the employee will need for their work. By Andy West
